Hip-hop rapper Edem has said he will have to believe in a political party’s ideology before openly campaigning for that party in an election year.
Celebrities including actor John Dumelo, musician A-Plus, radio host Abeiku Santana, among others, have openly declared their political support for one political party or the other, a trend in election years which is gaining popularity in the country.
But Edem, speaking on the Class Drive on Class91.3FM on Thursday August 25, said he would not campaign for any political party ahead of the December polls. He further disclosed that he would only campaign for a party based on its manifesto and ideologies.
“… If I have to campaign, then I have to believe in your ideologies. It is not going to be about money, I have to read your manifesto and believe as a young person that it’s going to impact the nation, then I fall in line with your policies and say: ‘OK, vote for this person because I believe in them,’” he told host Prince Benjamin.
The 2015 award winner for Best International Act in Africa at the Black Canadian Awards, however, noted that he would charge to perform on a political platform if invited by any political party.
“If it’s about coming to do a song for you, yeah, you will pay. If I have to perform on your platform, I will take money for it and perform because you are doing an event and I’m supposed to be a guest. But if I have to come out and say they should vote for a person then I have to understand your ideology because that is what makes a country great.”
