Former chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), George Haldane Lutterodt, has branded Team Ghana’s performance at the just ended IAAF World Championship in London as “disastrous”.
Ghana presented an eight-man team but not a single athlete progressed beyond the preliminary stages.
Speaking to Class Sports, the former Athletics chief said all the blame should be laid at the door step of the GAA.
“Obviously it was a disaster; the performance was nothing to write home about as none of them was able to qualify to the next round…there is nothing to [use to] describe it but as an absolute disaster. I’m not blaming the athletes; I’m blaming the GAA because they are supposed to handle these athletes. People are talking about personal best but we sent our athletes to go win medals,” he said.
Mr Lutterodt also called for an immediate probing into the $84,600 donated by the Ministry of Youth Sports ahead of the games.
“This is complete waste of money. We need to know what that money was used for because the tickets are paid for by the IAAF for the athletes and the chair and the secretary General. Accommodation there is free because you are in the game village, so they should explain what that $84,600 was used for,” he said.
