Selena Gomez left her heart onstage at the American Music Awards Sunday night.
While accepting the award for favorite female artist in the pop/rock category, the star addressed her recent break from the spotlight in an emotional speech.
“I think it’s safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life, whether I like it or not. I had to stop, ’cause I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside,” said Gomez, tearing up. “I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.
The “Same Old Love” singer is the most-followed celebrity on Instagram and often shares her life with her fans on social media.
“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here,” the singer urged as she motioned at her heart. “I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore.”
She also thanked them for their support over the last few months. “All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love with people that I love, and I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
Before leaving the stage, the entertainer also left her Selenators with a piece of advice: “If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken … whether you respect me or not, one thing you should know about is I care about people.”
Many of the celebrities in the audience — including Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande — appeared to be visibly touched by Gomez’s words. Her best friend Taylor Swift also showed her support on Instagram, posting a video of herself screaming when Gomez won the award.
At the end of August, Gomez took a career break to focus on her emotional health. Multiple sources confirmed the star recently sought professional treatment to get back into a positive headspace.
