Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has said that she did not enrol for national service after she completed her tertiary education.
“I did not do national service…” Ms Botchwey told parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 23, when she appeared before the committee to be vetted.
Explaining, the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom said the law that made national service mandatory came into effect a year after she had graduated.
Ghanaian students who complete tertiary education are under obligation to complete a year’s service to the nation. This is a pre-requisite for employment and holding public office in the country.
However, the Member of Parliament (MP) explained that the law making national service mandatory was passed after she had completed school.
“…The law came into effect a year after I left school,” she added.
