The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Election Review Committee (ERC) has criticised public comments by party members who have sought to give reasons for the party’s loss in the 2016 elections.
The committee, chaired by Prof Kwesi Botchwey, said it had noted with some regret that a number of party functionaries and leading party members had lately taken to media houses to air their views on party matters, including matters that the committee was set up to investigate, namely the causes of the party’s electoral defeat.
The committee, in a press statement on Friday, March 24, said the “committee’s doors are open and we urge all party members who have issues to raise or concerns to express to direct them to the committee to help the search for solutions to the challenges confronting the party”.
Since the defeat of the party at the 2016 general elections, several members of the NDC have been accusing each other of being the cause of the party’s fall.
The National Organiser of the NDC, Kofi Adams, who was campaign coordinator for the campaign, has been accused of hoarding cash and other logistics meant for campaigning at the grassroots.
He has denied this allegation and described the decision of some leading lights of the NDC to openly criticise the actions of the party and some persons within its ranks as a reflection of their inexperience and immaturity.
Victor Smith, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North in the 2016 polls, has also been accused of squandering monies meant for campaign activities in the constituency ahead of the 2016 elections by Alhaji Dan Baba, a leading member of the NDC in that constituency.
Others have put the blame on former President John Mahama, who was flag bearer of the party in the last elections.
Further, Kpone Katamanso MP Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo has said members of the erstwhile Mahama government did not treasure the political power they had, hence their failure to work hard enough to win the 2016 elections.
However, the committee said it would like to urge all party members “to resist the temptation to engage in recriminations and finger pointing so as not to undermine the integrity of the committee’s final report and recommendations, or sour the atmosphere for the conduct of the committee’s work”.
Meanwhile, former Information Minister Fritz Baffour has charged members of the opposition NDC to cease verbal attacks against each other.
He said aggrieved members should resort to the right channels for redress.
