Sunday’s heavy downpour left parts of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, flooded, especially Kulnyevilla and the Sagnarigu Districts. Azaara Alhassan, 68, a trader, was reported missing and her dead body was Monday morning found in a different community. She was reportedly coming back from the market when the incident happened in the Kulnyevilla community. The body of the woman had since been handed over to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic faith. The rains, which started in the early hours of the day, left areas like Sawaba, a suburb of Dungu in the Sagnarigu District, heavily flooded as well as Shishegu and Kulnyevilla. About 70 households were affected, with properties worth over thousands of Ghana cedis destroyed. Many residents have also been displaced. Nyankpala, the premier campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS), was not spared. Most market women were trapped on their way home and had to take shelter in nearby houses until the rains stopped. The Ghana Fire Service personnel, who went out on a rescue mission to assist affected victims, had a tough time due to the bad road network to some of the affected areas. The Sagnarigu District Nadmo Coordinator, Mr. Sulemana Musah, told DAILY GUIDE that about 20 staff had been dispatched to the affected areas to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the rains.
