There is the need for public speakers to pause and drink water when cough interrupts their presentation to allow the reflex causing the cough to ease before they resume their delivery, Dr Philip Asare, a medical officer at the Emmanuel Community Hospital in Accra, has advised.
According to him, if a speaker continues to speak while the cough has set in, it may lead to other complications that could be detrimental.
His comment comes at a time President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo insisted on finishing his inaugural speech on Saturday January 7 when his coughs blighted his presentation.
Speaking in an interview with Accra News’ Naa Atswei Oduro on Monday January 9, Dr Asare said: “Public speakers need to learn how to pause when coughs set in while speaking in order to avoid other complications. Water can help in dealing with a cough while speaking.”
He further indicated that cough could be a symptom of an ailment, hence anybody who coughs repeatedly should see the doctor for examination.
“If you are someone who talks a lot on public platforms, periodically, you need to let a doctor examine your throat to see if everything is in order,” he said.
