Ethiopian long distance icon, Haile Gebrselassie touched down at the Kotoka International Airport Thursday from Addis Ababa as the special guest of the Millennium Marathon final which takes off at the Independence Square in Accra on Saturday.
The highly decorated Gebrselassie, who was in Accra in March for the launch of the marathon, was welcomed at the airport by a host of dignitaries led by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed and the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.
Beginning today, he will undertake a number of corporate events ahead of Saturday’s 21-km race, including a visit tomorrow to the offices of the Graphic Communications Group Limited followed by a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Flagstaff House, rounding it off with a press conference at the Aviation Social Centre tomorrow evening.
Meanwhile, winners of the regional editions of the marathon have each been presented with a 32-inch Akai digital LED Television sets by Melcom Group of Companies.
Mr Ashim Morton, Managing Partner of the Millennium Marathon, received the TV sets on behalf of the winners, Joseph Yandal (Volta Region), James Ayamga (Ashanti Region), Malik Yakubu (Northern Region) and Prosper Amesiame (Eastern Region).
Godwin Avenorgbor, Director of Communications for the Melcom Group of Companies, said the donation was to support the Millennium Marathon which his outfit believed would be beneficial to the nation.
“Our packages for the Millennium Marathon include a digital television set for each of the regional champions to keep them abreast of global events and a large quantity of Melcom Nsupa to refresh the marathon runners and officials.
