State power transmitter Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is supporting the government’s fight against illicit small-scale mining (galamsey) due to the effect that the activities of illegal mining is having on GRIDCo’s operations.
According to Mr William Amuna, Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, the galamsey operators are mining close to their transmission towers, a situation that could result in dire consequences.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Monday 22 May, Mr Amuna said: “Normally, when the power generators produce the power from either Akosombo or Tema, the transmission lines transport the power to the 58 sub-stations across the country.
“These transmission lines pass through specific areas but the galamseyers are mining close to our transmission towers, a situation that would cost us dearly if we do not take drastic measures in dealing with it now.”
Mr Amuna added: “Some of these galamseyers are wielding deadly weapons, and, so, we liaise with the security agencies, especially the military, to fight them.
“I have told the workers not to engage in any argument whatsoever with them because they possess weapons.”
