Government will rehabilitate major markets across the country to make Ghana a major trade hub in the West African sub-region, First Lady Lordina Mahama has said.
Under the arrangement, government will absorb 10,000 head porters to provide them alternative sources of livelihood as part of the Youth Employment Agency.
Addressing market women at the first national market women’s conference in Accra, Mrs Mahama said the strategy was to break down barriers limiting women and pull them out of poverty whilst empowering them.
“While looking to provide alternative sources of livelihood for the kayayei, government will extend the 1000 in the Kayayei Youth Employment Agency programme to cover 10,000 head porters, popularly called kayayei,” she stated.
According to her, “The president only last week emphasised his commitment to rehabilitate all markets in the country to make it a place worth doing business. The modernisation of all major markets will continue to be the government’s strategy for expanding opportunities for traders across the country as well as making Ghana a major trading power house in the West African sub region.”
