The newly elected President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo-Mensah, has called for togetherness to help propel the common cause of the committee.
The Ghana Weightlifting Federation president was declared winner of Wednesday’s GOC elections where he amassed 33 votes to beat the incumbent Professor Francis Dodoo, who polled 28 votes.
Mr Nunoo-Mensah, who was recently elected onto the Executive Board of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA), in his acceptance speech asked all factions to move on from the verbal assaults that characterised the elections.
He said: “Elections are over and during those moments there are lots of factions, blocks, and those are natural characteristics of an election. But once the election ends, we’re one people with one destiny and are working for one country. Now we need to come together from both sides of the divide.”
He praised Prof Dodoo and promised to do his best in the interest of athletes.
“Prof Dodoo has blazed the trail set by the likes of K.N. Owusu and he has led very well. In the last five years, he was in charge of one of the most challenging periods in Ghana sports when it came to funding, so for him to be able to go through, I have to say he has really done well and deserves to be praised.”
