GN Bank has refuted claims that it sponsored and paid the filing fees of the presidential candidate and parliamentary candidates of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), founded by Groupe Nduom president Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, who owns the bank.
According to the Managing Director (MD) of GN Bank, Issah Adam, that impression has been created by a publication in the October 24 edition of the Daily Graphic which stated that a letter from the Economic and Organised Crime (EOCO) had indicated that: “Information available to this office [EOCO] is to the effect that you [GN Bank] financed the recent filing of nominations for both the Presidential and Parliamentary candidates with the total amount of GHS 1,750,000.00 from GN Bank”.
Mr Issah stressed that: “GN Bank has not financed PPP presidential and parliamentary candidates with such an amount”.
He pointed out that the PPP and Dr Nduom have accounts with the bank as customers and that the funds (GHS 1,700,000.00) in question were paid to the Electoral Commission in accordance with PPP’s National Treasurer’s express instructions.
Meanwhile, an Accra High Court is set to rule on a case brought before it by the PPP against the EC over the disqualification of Dr Nduom from contesting in the December 7 polls.
The court will decide on Friday, October 28, whether or not Dr Nduom’s disqualification was in accordance with the electoral laws.
The party was part of 12 others which had their flag bearers disqualified from contesting in the elections over alleged illegalities on the nomination forms.
The PPP is seeking “an order of prohibition to restrain the EC from proceeding with balloting for position of presidential candidates for the 7th December elections.”
The plaintiff is also seeking “…a further order directed against the 1st Respondent [EC boss Charlotte Osei] in her capacity as Returning Officer for Presidential elections to grant the Applicant the opportunity to amend and alter the one anomaly found in his nomination papers as well as accept his nomination papers as amended or altered to enable him contest as a presidential candidate for the 7 December 2016 elections.”
The suit has Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom as the ex parte applicant, Charlotte Osei as the first respondent, and the EC as the second respondent.
