The Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has said government has begun plans and processes to ensure the two Guantanamo Bay detainees leave the country when the agreement ends in January, 2018.
This follows Parliament’s ratification of the agreement between the governments of the United States of America and Ghana on the resettlement of the two former GITMO detainees in the West African country.
The ratification follows a Supreme Court ruling which described as unconstitutional the decision by former President John Mahama to accept the terror suspects Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby.
The court subsequently ordered the Executive to, within the next three months, either bring the agreement to Parliament for ratification or return them to where they came from.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, 1 August 2017, Ms Botchwey said engagements are ongoing to ensure the two exit the country on the agreed date.
“I can assure this house that government institutions such as my Ministry, the Ministry for the Interior, the Ministry of National Security will work together to ensure an exit plan or otherwise is put in motion and I can assure you also that this has already started. Engagements have already started taking into account the sentiments of Ghanaians on this matter,” she stated.
