The Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) has joined forces with ECOWAS Gender Development Centre to fight cross-border crime in the West African sub-region.
Money laundering, human trafficking, terrorism and trans-border crimes are among major challenges facing the region impeding the economic development of ECOWAS member states.
Speaking at a forum on gender and youth dimensions of financial and cross- border criminality in West Africa, Deputy Director of GIABA, Brain Anku Sapati, said the meeting will offer delegates an opportunity to deliberate on issues to combat regional border criminality in the sub-region.
Although Ghana has not witnessed any terrorist attacks, neighbouring countries, La Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, have suffered various attacks in the recent past, leading to loss of lives. Security agencies feel it is appropriate to institute measures to curtail in future attacks.
Ghana has not been spared, however, from the issues of human trafficking as well as money laundering, causing the state to lose billions of cedis.
