Allegations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is paying for the endorsement of its flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo by other flag bearers ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections, are nonsensical, Yaw Boabeng Asamoah, the party’s parliamentary candidate for Adentan, has said.
According to him, the NPP does not need to pay for those endorsements because the party believes it has a formidable presidential candidate for the elections.
His comments follow claims by some executives of the United Progressive Party (UPP) that their flag bearer, Akwasi Addai Odike, received GHS500,000 as bribe from the NPP to endorse Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to the executives, investigations had revealed that the party’s National Organiser, Mr Saahene, also received GHS6000 of the said amount while Mr Sammy Awuku, who is the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, also took 10 per cent after brokering the deal.
The executives have asked members of the party to ignore Mr Odike’s endorsement of the NPP as he is an individual whose views, opinions, actions, and inactions do not represent those of the party.
The executives, who described Mr Odike as a “failed businessman” and a “political prostitute” asked him to refund an amount of GHS600,000 to the party and also return two Toyota Pick-Ups belonging to the party.
Mr Mr Boabeg Asamoah, however, told Emefa Apawu on Class 91.3 FM’s ‘505’ news programme on Monday November 28 that: “It is absolute nonsense. Please anybody who seeks to endorse Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is welcome. Nana is best-placed to run this country at this time. Nana Addo has the integrity, he is transparent and accountable and that is what this country needs.
“He is transparent and accountable to the people. He presents the leadership that will not steal money in the name of infrastructure, leadership that will serve the interest of Ghanaians, using taxpayers’ money to work for Ghanaians. Nana Addo is poised to offer that leadership and Ghanaians have bought into that idea so any political party which wants Ghana to work, which believes Ghana must work and which believes the way forward for Ghana to work is through Nana Addo is welcome to endorse Nana Addo.”
