After months of preparation and anticipation, the inaugural Millennium Marathon is here and over 4,000 professional and amateur runners to hit the road to compete in the 21km and 5km races respectively as well as the Ambassadorial Run.
The Marathon, which has marathon and world long distance legend Haile Gebrselassie as the number one participant and ambassador, has attracted over 300 foreign runners.
The professional race which has prizes at stake, will be run over 21km while the family and corporate run will be over 5km. Both races will start and end at the Independence Square.
The professional runners will get off the starting blocks at the starter’s gun at 6.15a.m. while the 5km race start 15 minutes later. The Ambassadorial run will take place at 6.45 a.m.
The race, which will see some major roads blocked for a while, will start at the Independence Square, through the La-Beach-Trade Fair road through to Giffard-El Wak road, the 37 Military Hospital-Liberation Road, finally through the Atta Mills High Street and then back to the finish line at the Independence Square.
From the Independence Square, the Ambassadorial and Family Run will go through Osu, the Oxford Street, the cemetery and back to the finish line at the Independence Square.
While the professional race has attracted all the top marathon runners in the country, the Ambassadorial, Corporate and Family Run has the likes of Gebrselassie, Ms Lucy Quist, the MD of Airtel Ghana, the Mayor of Addis Ababa, Hon Diriba Kuma, the Minister of Tourism, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Ambassador Victor Gbeho and Ambassador Ashim Morton, the CEO of Millennium Marathon Sports, all racing.
Mr Ken Ashigbey, the Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited, will also lead a team from the company to participate.
The event has Airtel as its headline sponsors with the National Investment Bank (NIB) and several other companies supporting.
