Security analyst and international relations expert, Irbard Ibrahim, has allayed fears of a possible terror attack in the country.
His position comes on the heels of a recent terror attack in neighbouring Burkina Faso where 20 people were killed and a number wounded in the centre of the capital city of Ouagadougou on Monday, 14 August 2017.
Mr Ibrahim, speaking to Class News, was confident that such threats would not come close to Ghana since there is no motivation and interest from religious extremists to do so and that recent terror attacks appear to be taking trends in only francophone countries.
“There is no need for the good people of Ghana to panic. When you look at the [trend] of attacks we’ve seen, right from Grand-Bassam in Ivory Coast and the back to back attacks we’ve seen in Burkina Faso, when you understand the dynamic of the militant organisations, you’ll realise that this is a reaction to the French government’s Operation Barkhane. Which part of West Africa is under French occupation? These militants are only having a natural reaction to that invasion,” he stated.
“Gambia hasn’t been a target of such attacks, Sierra Leone hasn’t, Liberia hasn’t and Ghana hasn’t as well. The only Anglophone country grappling with attacks is Nigeria, and Boko Haram is purely domestic. And so as Ghana keeps a very good diplomatic relationship with the rest of the world, we condemn such attacks when they happen, we send our condolences to the families of the deceased, as far as we continue on such tangent. There is no motivation or justification why militants will want to target Ghana. So Ghanaians should take it easy and go about their activities,” he added.
