Hon. Clement Apaak, MP for Builsa South constituency in the Upper East Region is calling on government to put a five-year ban on all mining in the country for the river bodies to regain its state.
According to him, Ghana is in crisis situation and therefore wishes the government puts a total ban on the mining for at least five years.
He says those involving in the illegal mining are spoiling the water bodies, poisoning the ground water which is going to get into food chain and that Ghanaians will be facing existential threat.
Hon. Apaak says the amount of money Ghana Water is spending to purify water due to the illegal mining is very appalling.
The MP for Builsa South says government after putting a five-year ban on all mining can use that period to recover the lands, plant trees, open up the river bodies to settle down so that within that period they can form a sustainable, holistic and nationalistic way of ensuring mining that will not be detrimental to the natural environment.
Hon. Clement Apaak further explained that the current leadership has failed Ghanaians including the Minsters and the security services.
“The current leadership of this country has failed, the president has failed awfully, if they have not failed, why is it getting worse by the day.”
He says things are getting worse by the day.
Hon Apaak added that Ghana has been colonized by Galamsey Kingpins who are now controlling the country.
He does not understand how a state machinery will be powerless in the face of those spoiling the environment of the country, he added.
He says he feels the country is not independent anymore and therefore feels the citizens must rise.
“Look, I’m been honest in telling you today and now and I should be quoted that Ghana has been colonized by Galamsey Kingpins, we are not independent. If not, how can a whole state machinery be powerless in the face of this public pillaging and destruction of our environment, we are not independent, we are being held hostage because the state and those in charge of the affairs of the state have failed and that is why we the people must rise up, we can’t count on them because they are accomplice, that is what is happening”
