The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in partnership with the Retired National Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG), has initiated a “Special Endowment Fund” aimed serving as a pension for retired national footballers.
Mr. Willie Klutse, Public Relations Manager of RENFAG, who disclosed this to the GNA Sports said, the fund will serve as a form of pension for all retired national team players from the Under-17 level to the Black Stars (both female and male).
According to him, retired female national team players will start earning from the fund after age 45, whilst the males will start enjoying from the fund after age 50.
He indicated the Kwesi Nyantakyi led GFA will pay a seed money into the fund to start up the investment, whilst the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) is also expected to contribute to the fund.
Mr. Klutse called on MOYS to devout 5% of gate proceeds from all home matches of the Black Stars into the fund to ensure its sustenance.
“This will be one of the major sources of contribution to the fund and it is our hope that, the ministry will agree to this proposal so we implement it,” he stated.
Mr Kluste said the initiative was a laudable one and there was the need for corporate bodies, individuals and other donor organizations to contribute to it.
The GFA and RENFAG will on Wednesday, September 30, launch the fund at the Alisa Hotel.
He also lauded Mr. Nyantakyi for the initiative adding that, their cries over the years have been heard by the football governing body.
