The former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Inusah Fuseini, has said even if government stops galamsey today, the waterbodies will not be healed in the lifetime therefore charges government not to give up the fight against galamsey.
Speaking in an interview on Accra based radio station Okay fm, monitored by voicefmonline.com the former Minister said, a failure to go through with the fight and successfully quashing galamsey and its devastating effects on the natural environment would cost future generations so much more.
Citing research findings, he shared that it would take close to a 100 years for lands degraded in Ghana so far as a result of galamsey to be restored to their natural state.
“but with the water issue, if we do nothing at all but stop galamsey, it will take close to 100years for the water to come back.”
“the waterbodies are dead; we are then lucky we are in a tropical area that’s why it keeps raining, the water bodies are dead, you won’t see fishes in the water anymore, they are dead so it will take a very long time for the water to restore, very, very long time, probably all of us living on earth now will not be around”
He says it means all Ghanaians living today might not see the return, even if they stop galamsey activities today, might not see the full return or recovery of the land in the lifetime so they shouldn’t give up in the fight.
“It means all of us living in Ghana today might not see the return, even if we stop galamsey activities today, might not see the full return or recovery of the land in our lifetime. So we cannot give up!” he said.
His comment comes on the back of Ghanaians seem to suggest a strong link between galamsey activities and politics in the country.
