The Ga South Municipal Assembly (GSMA) has elected a 32-year-old teacher, Mohammed Abdul Wahab, as its Presiding Member.
Mr Wahab, the Assembly member for the Obom Electoral Area, who went unopposed, polled 26 votes out of the 28 votes cast, with two against, in an election supervised by the Ga South Municipal Electoral Office.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Wahab promised to unite members of the assembly and strengthen its capacity to meet its obligations.
He said as a newly created assembly, it had daunting task and challenges which needed to be surmounted in order to move the municipality to a higher pedestal and called for support from his colleagues to accomplish the vision and mission of the assembly.
Attitude towards work
Addressing members earlier, the deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Elizabeth Sackey, charged the assembly to work harder to make it a model within the region.
She commended members of the Municipal Assembly for moving the assembly that far and reminded them of the prosperous times ahead.
Ms Sackey admonished workers to change their attitude towards work and eschew lateness for increased productivity for national development.
For his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for the GSMA, Mr Joseph Nyarni Stephen, said the creation of the assembly had come with challenges which called for new vision and direction to achieve targets and goals.

Mr Stephen said the assembly would work assiduously with the support of all and the available resources to surmount the challenges, especially in the areas of health, education, sanitation and the provision of other infrastructure, to improve the living standards of the people within the municipality.
Mrs Amerley Akowuah, a District Magistrate at Weija, later administered the oath of office to usher Mr Wahab into office.
Members later ratified the assembly’s logo, which comprises a canoe (top left), a matchete and a hoe (top right), symbols of the major occupation of the indigenes, over a stool as a symbol of the traditional authority in the area.
The assembly also constituted its sub-committees and the executive committee before it adjourned sine die.
