The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has said Sunday’s tanker yard explosion in Tema was caused by the activities of some individuals who were siphoning fuel from one of the tankers.
Twelve fuel tankers went up in flames, which also swept through portions of the Ashaiman Timber market.
Several fire tenders battled the explosion for hours before bringing the fire under control.
Speaking to Class News, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Billy Anaglate, said the fire was caused by illegal activity.
“We had 12 tankers out of which nine were totally burnt and three partially burnt. They had 25 tankers parked in this yard but 12 of them were those that got burnt… the place is a yard in which tankers normally park and this yard people were siphoning fuel and the siphoning is what caused the actual fire. There have never been any injury, there have never been any death. The only thing that got burnt was a goat,” he stated.
