The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has debunked assertions that due to the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS), some headmasters are putting up hostels in order to redirect the students to reside in those hostels as a way of taking advantage of the system.
General Secretary of GNAT, David Ofori Acheampong, told Accra News’ Obeng Mensah in an interview on Thursday, September 14 that these claims are “baseless and not true”.
Since the launch of the Free SHS by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, some parents have indicated that some head teachers of the schools their wards have been placed are redirecting them to hostels that belong to the head teachers with the excuse that the boarding facilities are full.
Government has indicated that these and similar claims by the parents will be investigated.
But Mr Acheampong said: “Which headmaster has that kind of money to build a hostel because of Free SHS so he can redirect some of the students to go and stay there? These claims are false.
“Some of the parents are making baseless allegations against the head teachers. Why will a headmaster who has just four years to go on retirement spend his entire money on building a hostel because of Free SHS? This story doesn’t add.
“The headmaster will rather prefer to use that money to build an apartment for himself to live in when he goes on retirement. These claims are false.”
