Former Black Stars player Augustine Arhinful has urged Ghanaians to forget about the mistakes of the senior national team in Brazil and rally behind the squad in their bid to qualify for a fourth successive World Cup.
The Black Stars have lost the support of most Ghanaian fans for holding the nation to ransom over the payment of their appearance fees during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Ghana ended up exiting the competition in the first round following reports of indiscipline and the lack of patriotism.
The Stars are on a journey to qualify once again to yet another World Cup and have been calling on the fans to back them in their quest.
Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Friday 11 November ahead of the team’s World Cup qualifier against the Pharoahs of Egypt on Sunday, Arhinful urged Ghanaians to rise above the Brazil experience and back the team for victory.
He rejected claims that the players were unpatriotic, saying: “If they were not patriotic, they wouldn’t even come down to perform for the Black Stars.
“Let us not use their mistake to judge them. We are human beings and we are going to be at fault along the line, so if something happened and it was not the best, I don’t think we should use it forever against them,” the former Borussia Dortmund player stated.
The Stars will play Egypt in a must-win game to keep their qualifying hopes alive after a goalless draw with Uganda in their first qualifying game while Egypt won 2-1 away in Congo.
