The commitment of presidential candidates to a peaceful election on 7 December is very vital for a successful poll, the Commonwealth Observer Mission has noted.
As such, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is leading the mission, observed on Thursday December 1 that they are looking “forward to the presidential candidates reaffirming their commitment to peaceful elections”.
The South African diplomat, who will be in Ghana for the next two weeks to monitor the process, disclosed that the mission is made up of 17 eminent persons drawn across various commonwealth countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.
He assured that they “will act impartially and independently to scrutinise the organisation of the elections” to make sure it aligns with Ghana’s national laws as well as regional and international standards which the country has committed itself to.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) is currently meeting with the seven presidential candidates who are contesting in this year’s elections to get them to commit to accept the outcome, whatever it may be.
The meeting is being held at the Moevenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra under the auspices of the National Peace Council.
All the candidates are at the meeting. They will be made to sign a peace accord and also commit to accept the outcome of the 7 December polls.
The meeting was also aimed at giving the candidates the opportunity to directly seek clarification from the Chair of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, ahead of the polls on Wednesday.
