World football governing body FIFA has agreed to increase the number of teams to the World Cup from 32 to 48.
The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48-team World Cup beginning 2026 at meeting in Zurich on Tuesday January 10.

FIFA’s internal research has suggested the expanded format will increase revenues by $1bn (about £800m), raising total profits from the event to nearly £3.5bn.
There will be 16 groups of three teams. African and Asian confederations will expect their current allocation of five places each to be significantly increased.
