President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence there will be more prosecution for corruption with the coming into being of the office of the Special Prosecutor.
“With the office of the Special Prosecutor now in place we can expect more prosecutions for corruption in the coming months and public officials, present and past, should be on notice that they would be held accountable for their actions,” he said at the 61st Independence Day anniversary at the Independence Square in Accra on Tuesday, 6 March 2018.
Nana Akufo-Addo further noted that corruption and the stealing of public funds continues to hold back the development of the nation and, therefore, called on Ghanaians to act to protect the public purse since corruption is not a partisan matter.
His comment follows the prosecution of Mr Abuga Pele, a former National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) and Mr Philip Akpeena Assibit, a representative of the Goodwill International Group (GIG) who was also implicated in the (GYEEDA) scandal.
Mr Pele was sentenced to six years in prison after he was found guilty of causing financial loss to the state while Mr Assibit serves a 12-year jail term.
Nana Akufo-Addo believes with the introduction of the Office of Special Prosecutor occupied by former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, more corruption cases will be prosecuted.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor is a specialised agency to investigate all cases of corruption involving public officers, politically-exposed persons as well as individuals in the private sector implicated in corrupt practices and to prosecute these offences on the authority of the Attorney-General.
