About 1,600 pupils from six schools which serve 15 communities in the Kwahu East district in the Eastern Region have abandoned school and are currently staying at home for close to two months for fear of being attacked by Fulani herdsmen in the area.
The affected schools are Atta-ne-Atta D/A Primary, Adumasa Presby Primary, Oboyan D/A Primary and JHS, Abotriansa D/A Primary, Dwerebease Presby Primary, Dwerebease D/A JHS, and Onyemso D/A Primary and JHS.
Many farming communities in the Eastern Region have suffered from the activities of Fulani herdsmen as acres of farms have been destroyed by their cattle.
Despite earlier assurances by police to take steps to deal with the situation, residents of the district say they still have no peace as the situation is posing a major security threat to them.
Several schools in the area have had to be closed down over fears of attacks on school children, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Asiedu Acheampong disclosed to Class News’ regional correspondent McAnthony Dagyenga.
He appealed to authorities to beef up security to enable the children go back to the classroom to learn and prepare for the BECE in two months.
“It’s all about the security of these children and the people over there in general… For their safety, it wasn’t possible for us to let them move in and out like that, so these schools have been shut down,” he stated.
“For now, six schools have been shut down and the BECE candidates amongst them are 316. As others are preparing for the BECE, these children have been staying home for over a month now and BECE is in June.
“The community members cannot even go to their farms let alone allow children to go out on their own and it’s all about these Fulani herdsmen. They attack them whenever they meet them. So we are calling on authorities as quickly as possible to get to their aid.”
