Drivers of commercial vehicles (trotro) at Effiduase in the Ashanti Region embarked on a demonstration on the morning of Thursday, 27 October to protest against excessive charges from the local chapter of the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) through the connivance of loal police officers.
The protesting drivers have also left commuters stranded as they have blocked other drivers from leaving the station with passengers.
Accra FM’s Alexander Afrifa spoke to one of the drivers, who explained that drivers who pick passengers outside the station within Effiduase had been forced to pay a fine of GHS100 per passenger as penalty to a task force set up by GPRTU chairman Mallam Adamu Issah.
He also accused Mallam Issah of collecting tolls from drivers without rendering accounts to the authorities, while conditions at the station deteriorate.
The drivers have threatened to prevent any cars from loading at the station if the extortions do not stop.
