The office of the Electoral Commission is currently under heavy security guard to safeguard its processes as it collates results of Wednesday’s general elections.
The heavy security deployment follows a press conference held by the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) which said Ghanaians will resist any move by the EC to manipulate results for the governing National Democratic Congress even though the NPP, according to National Youth Organiser Sammi Awuku, has won both the presidential and parliamentary polls.
The NPP’s press conference was immediately followed by a press conference by the NDC which accused the Danquah-Busia-Dombo party of stoking tension and inciting the youth to mayhem.
The two frontrunners are claiming victory in the polls. The NPP claims its analyses of results so far show its flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo has won by close to 54% while the NDC claims its candidate President John Mahama is leading his arch-rival with 50.6%.
Meanwhile, the EC has said it will not allow itself to be stampeded into declaring results.
