The Electoral Commission’s(EC) modalities set to comply with the July 5 judgment given by the Supreme court in the deletion of names of National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) registrants will be announced by next week, the commission said Friday.
A statement issued and signed by the deputy Chair of the Commission, Georgina Opoku Amankwah also said the announcement next week will simultaneously outline the modalities for exhibition of the 2016 Provisional Voters register which is billed for July 18, 2016 in all polling/exhibition centres across the country.
“The commission is taking appropriate steps to comply with the court’s directives and would make same public in the coming week,” the statement said.
This comes after the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) and the Civic Forum Initiative(CFI) earlier issued a joint statement demanding that the Electoral Commission comes forth with clear modalities on how it intends to carry out July 5 Supreme court order.
The Supreme Court on July 5 further clarified a May 5 ruling ordering the EC to delete names of persons who used the National Health Insurance (NHI) cards to register because it was not a sufficient proof of citizenship.
The clarification was sought by plaintiffs Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako who was dissatisfied by the Electoral Commission’s lackadaisical attitude to implement the terms of the judgment handed on May 5. The Commission had maintained that the May 5 order never said NHIS registrants should be deleted.
The Commission until today was silent on a public announcement that will highlight the crucial steps that meant to be taken by the commission in the cleaning of the ineligible registrants ordered by the apex court.
