Nominations have been opened today, September 13, 2016, by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for presidential and parliamentary aspirants of registered political parties as well as independent aspirants to file to contest in the December 7 polls.
The filing of the nomination forms is expected to be done by September 29 and 30, according to the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the EC, Yussif Alhassan Ayuba.
The filing fee for the presidential aspirants is pegged at GHS50,000 while that for parliamentary aspirants is GHS10,000.
Meanwhile, some of the political parties have complained about the filing fee. The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the fees are too expensive. The People’s National Convention (PNC) as well as the Convention People’s Party (CPP) have expressed similar sentiments. However, the governing National Democratic Congress has said it only has a problem with the fee for parliamentary nominees but OK with that for presidential nominees. The opposition APC led by Hassan Ayariga, on the other hand believes the filing fee of GHS50,000 is too little. The party said should have been pegged at GHS120,000.
The EC has indicated that it will meet over the concerns expressed by the various parties.
