The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has revealed that the Ghana Bar Association and chartered accountants will be involved in the collation of results of December’s presidential and parliamentary elections at the constituency level.
In addition, these professionals will also be involved in the checking and filling of forms. This forms part of efforts to ensure a free and fair election as the country heads to the polls to elect legislators and a president to manage the affairs of the country for the next four years.
Mrs Charlotte Osei, Chairperson of the EC, explained that this was not exactly like the Nigerian model but a necessary addition to make the election process more credible.
“When we are tallying in the collation process to remove errors, we think it may be beneficial to have another layer of checks so the lawyers will make sure that the forms are properly filled and the accountants will check and make sure that the numbers have been added up properly,” she explained at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday August 23.
