The high rate of importation of low-grade products into the country will not be tolerated under the Akufo-Addo-led government, Minister of Trade-designate Alan Kyerematen has said.
Mr Kyerematen, who served in the same capacity in the Kufuor administration, indicated that government would “ensure safeguard measures to prevent the damping of substandard goods into our country”.
He made this revelation in a response to a question concerning the importation of goods into the country when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for vetting on Monday, January 23.
He was emphatic that government “will support locally produced agricultural and manufactured goods to every extent possible”.
According to him, the NPP government is “prepared to support them (local producers) to be able to compete, even within our own local market”.
There have been suggestions for tighter regulations or even a total ban on certain products but Mr Kyerematen said: “It is not prudent to make a declaration that we will ban imports of commodities into the country because of the implications.”
