Former Accra Hearts of Oak winger Bernard Don Bortey is currently undergoing trials with his former club in the hope of getting back to active football in the Ghana Premier League for the 2016/17 season.
The former African champions started pre-season training last Saturday but also opened their doors to a few individuals who would want to justify themselves for a place in their squad.
Don Bortey who also had a number of call-ups to the senior national team in his prime has expressed confidence of making the squad despite having been out of action for a long period.
“I am very optimistic of making the grade with Accra Hearts of Oak and also playing in the G-six competition. It’s not my first time playing at this level, I have even played for the Black Stars and hopefully after the trial period, my experience will come to bear. I‘m keen to show Accra Hearts of Oak and the world what Bernard Don Bortey can do, I still have it,” he told Class Sports’ Hussein Hassan.
On whether he has still got the pace to change games like he did in the past, he said he is not only coming back to influence games, but to guide the club’s younger players.
“I am here to guide the younger players in the dressing room and also to advise them on what direction to take their careers. These boys have got no other job other than football, so, it is critical that they get someone with experience to guide them and I want to assure them that I will be here for them.”
The club’s newly appointed assistant coach, Henry Lamptey Wellington, has, however, indicated he will be very meticulous in his judgement of players who are on trial.
“The issue is not only about coming in and kicking the ball. You may end up signing the wrong players, so a lot more needs to be looked at before arriving at a final decision to sign the player,” he said.
