Interior Minister Ambrose Dery and Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu are billed to visit Bimbilla in the Northern Region today, Tuesday 14 February, in connection with last week’s chieftaincy conflict which led to the death of 10 people.
Mr Dery and Mr Asante-Apeatu will be meeting a team of investigators sent to the conflict-prone area to get to the bottom of the gunfire exchange that wreaked havoc and rendered the area a ghost town.
One hundred and thirty police officers and 40 soldiers were deployed to the area last week to keep the peace and also protect the Regent and others who may be targeted for elimination.
Mr Dery said last week that the dispatch was necessary following the killing and destruction caused last Tuesday.
The dead include three children, six women, and a male adult. The deceased children were all under five. Eighteen people who got injured in the clashes were also receiving treatment at the hospital.
The conflict started following an attempt by the Bimbilla Regent to install a sub-chief, an action which flew in the face of an earlier agreement against any of the four gates doing so.
Following the clashes, an already existing 8pm to 6am curfew was reviewed 4pm to 6am.
Mr Dery told journalists at a briefing that the government had no intentions of interfering in the Bimbilla chieftaincy crisis.
