Last week’s attack on a regional security coordinator by the Delta Force, the private security arm of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, “won’t happen again”, George Ayisi Boateng, a leading member of the party, has promised.
The heavily built men, led by one Kwadwo Bamba, 37, last Friday, March 24, stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and violently removed from office Mr George Agyei, the newly appointed regional security coordinator, on the grounds that they would not be able to work with him as he was not a native of the region. The group said Mr Agyei did not partake in the campaign for the 2016 poll that brought the NPP to power.
Police have since arrested and released on bail Mr Bamba and four others involved in the incident, which has been condemned by some party bigwigs including Sammi Awuku, National Youth Organiser, with calls by others for the leadership of the party to rein in their vigilante groups.
Commenting on the matter ahead of this weekend’s visit of President Akufo-Addo to the region, Mr Boateng said measures have been taken to forestall a repeat of last week’s thuggery.
“Ever since this happened, if I tell you what steps our elders have taken on this you would be amazed. We speak to them (Delta Force members), we meet them and we advise them… and they listen to us… So it won’t happen again, I can assure you it will not happen again. Whatever happened will not result again, so let’s be hopeful,” he told Chief Jerry Forson on Accra100.5FM’s morning show, Ghana Yensom, on Thursday March 30.
He urged the IGP and the police to go about their duties and not give in to intimidations from any quarters and asked them to step up their visibility “in all corners” of Kumasi, to crush any persons intent on disturbing the peace. According to him, despite their limited personnel, police can adopt strategies to be “everywhere”, something which could have averted Friday’s attack.
Mr Boateng, however, said persons found to be culpable in the incident should be dealt with by the law to serve as an “example” to others, saying a “truthful leader” like President Akufo-Addo embodies the rule of law and will not shield anyone who breaks the law in the name of politics.
He further disclosed that the leadership of the party in the region was set to meet disgruntled party communicators at 10am Thursday to thrash out issues.
The NPP’s communicators threatened a boycott of programmes on radio and TV over their apparent neglect by the party following its 2016 electoral victory.
“I can assure you and I can assure all your listeners that our communicators will work as they do every day. There is nothing to fear,” he stated.
