Thirteen members of pro-government vigilante group Delta Force, who escaped from custody after being remanded by a Kumasi Circuit Court, have been fined 200 penalty units each and will sign a bond of good behaviour for a period of six months or in default serve three years in prison.
This was the ruling of the presiding judge Ekow Mensah when they appeared before the court on Tuesday, April 11.
Counsel for the accused, Gary Nimako, had pleaded with the court that the 13 turned themselves in after the attack at the Regional Security Coordinating Council and did not give the police a hectic time to search for them.
Additionally, he said the defendants were young men who should be allowed time to reform and that they were first time offenders in breaking custody.
The 13 are Kojo Fosu Bamba (aka Kojo Bamba), Awal Sadat Abubakar, Abubakar Sadiq Abuhammed, Jamil Issa, Hamza Mohammed, Salu Issahak, Akwasi Owusu, Kwabena Owusu, Kofi Kyei, Agya Boadi, Salu Yussif, Yussif Salu, and Kwaku Awortwe.
The 13, until their escape, were facing charges of a conspiracy to commit crime, assault of a public officer, causing unlawful damage, and preventing a public officer from performing his lawful duties when they stormed the Ashanti Regional Security Council to drag the regional security coordinator out of his office.
They will, however, appear before the Kumasi Circuit Court to face charges concerning the attack on the regional security coordinator.
