The Ghana Police Service must do everything possible to end the activities of land guards, particularly given their attacks on innocent persons, Gomoa East MP Kojo Asemanyi has entreated.
He was worried about the spate of land disputes and the associated use of land guards to attack individuals without recourse to the laws of the country.
“The police must step in because it is criminal, and people are riding on that to commit other crimes like armed robbery, some people rape, etc.,” he told Umaru Sandah Amadu on the Saturday March 25 edition of the Big Issue on Citi FM.
He said the situation was worrying because “some of the nurses who have travelled to work at Gomoa Fetteh are being attacked and assaulted to the point of rape by some of these land guards”.
He continued: “A nurse called me and she was so angry concerning some land guards who tried to touch her after closing from work and she feels so unsafe.”
For the lawmaker, irrespective of the owners of any piece of land, the police must arrest any attackers “and prosecute them”.
He indicated that “people must fight land issues in the court of law” and not by the use of land guards.
To buttress his point, he explained that even though he is an MP, he has decided to use the law courts to reclaim a piece of land owned by his family that has been sold to some Chinese.
