Chinese engaged in light fishing in Ghana will soon be arrested and dealt with according to law, Nene Sorsey Quarshie, Chief Fisherman at Prampram and a member of the Fishing Task Force, has revealed.
According to him, the task force is at the moment cracking down on Ghanaian fishermen engaged in the illegal practice, following which foreign nationals guilty of such act will be dealt with.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday June 27, Mr Quarshie indicated that the decision to clamp down on light fishing is to protect the sea and its habitats.
He said: “At the moment we have several Ghanaians who are engaged in light fishing which is illegal, and so the task force is dealing with the Ghanaians now.
“When we are done with the Ghanaians then we will focus our attention on the Chinese who are also engaged in same act.
“We cannot deal with foreign nationals at a time our own people are violating the law. That is why it seems we are quiet on the Chinese, not that we are being discriminatory.”
