President John Dramani Mahama does not need a personal gun as the country’s security services are more than capable of providing protection for him at any time, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Marshall Michael Samson-Oje, has stated.
“Any gun that can fire 200 rounds continuously cannot be concealed and I doubt if my president will carry that. The president has enough protection and it is our duty to protect him too. He does not need to carry a gun,” he stated.
His comments come in the wake of reports that Mr Mahama had imported a pistol and subsequently applied for a licence from the Arms and Ammunition Unit of the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
But the Chief of Defence Staff played down the allegation at a press interaction with the executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the International Press Centre on Tuesday June 28.
Critics have been of the opinion that if, indeed, the president embarked on such an action, it could lead to a rise in the number of citizens applying to own guns in the wake of renewed robberies and heightened tensions in the build-up to the 2016 polls.
