The two police officers and civilian involved in a botched heist of a bullion van belonging to GCB Bank at Maame Krobo in the Eastern Region have been charged with attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit murder.
The three accused persons: Corporal Solomon Elvis Mensah, Lance Corporal Daniel Kissi Abrokwa, and Hafisu Muhammad, a driver, are currently on remand.
The three escaped from police custody as they were being transferred to the regional police command in Koforidua, a situation that caused locals of Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains North District to pour out onto the streets to march to the local police station to demand answers. They torched the station in anger.
The rowdy march forced police officers to fire warning shots and tear gas into the crowd to restrain them. About 16 people were injured in the skirmishes.
The bullion attack, which occurred at Maame Krobo led to the death of the driver of the van. A police officer who was accompanying the van also got injured in the attack.
