The free service introduced by the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) will only be in the capital, Accra, and will be piloted on one of the four routes demarcated for the Ayalolo service – Amasaman through Achimota to Circle and to the Central Business District at Tudu – before its extension to the other routes after proving to be efficient and reliable.
After the week-long free ride, GAPTE will begin full operations with 28 buses, which will later be scaled up to 245 when all the four corridors are activated.
This was revealed by the Marketing and Communications Manager of GAPTE, Roland Bruce, in an interview with Class News’ Ekow Annan.
The Scania buses are disability-friendly with Wi-Fi systems. The scheduled buses are also fully automated, especially, with regards to fare collection.
The new transport system is to improve vehicular movement and reduce traffic on some busy streets.
The other corridors where the buses will travel when fully operational are Mallam-Kaneshie to the Central Business District (CBD) in Accra; Adenta through 37 to the National Theatre to Tudu; and the Beach Road from Ashiaman, Teshie, Labadi through to Tudu.
