A feminist group called Pepper Dem Ministries has urged women to regularly get screened to know their breast cancer status as early detection can save their lives.
October is marked as Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 15,820 cases of cancers occur annually in Ghana.
Pepper Dem Ministries, in a statement, said breasts cancer need not be a death sentence.
The group, while sympathising with breast cancer victims, urged them and all women to seek support.
“We would like to urge all to regularly get screened and examined to know our status. There are a number of free screening exercises being offered particularly in this month of October in various healthcare facilities and programmes, and we would like to encourage all to endeavor to get screened,” the group stated.
Pepper Dem Ministries noted that although breast cancer commonly affects women, men should also be on the alert as one in 1000 men are likely to be diagnosed with the condition in their lifetime, making it a serious health concern for all regardless of gender.
“Prevention is better than cure as the high death rates are often linked to late diagnosis. Get checked before it is too late for health is wealth,” the group advised.
