The Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has disclosed that the Ministry will officially petition the International Boxing Federation (IBF) to protest against the outcome of the bout between Ghana’s Richard Commey and Robert Easter Jr of the United States.
Commey lost out on becoming the IBF lightweight champion to Easter Jr on Friday September 9 in a split decision.
Judge one scored the bout 115-112 in favour of Easter Jr, Judge two scored it 114-113 for Commey while the final judge called it 114-113 for Easter Jr. but Commey has insisted he was robbed.
Speaking to Class Sports after a brief ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday, September 12, to welcome Commey back into the country from the USA, Mr Vanderpuye said Commey deserved to have won the bout, hinting at filing a protest. “In fact, that is what I want to do after sitting down with the technical people; I will personally be interested in the petition that we will send to the IBF protesting against this verdict. I have a chance of talking to [someone] who’s been in boxing for long and we have advised ourselves on the next line of action. We will formally as a country protest,” Mr Vanderpuye stated.
Commey’s defeat to Easter Jr was his first in his professional career.
