The recent disruptions in the supply of electricity to most parts of Accra are due to last week’s heavy rains, Eric Asante, Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Accra West, has said.
On Tuesday 31 January, a downpour in Accra pulled down huge billboards, electric poles, and trees, in some cases. The rain also ripped off the roof of parliament.
Many parts of the capital have experienced prolonged hours of power cuts since then.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Monday, 6 February, Mr Asante said: “We all witnessed what happened last week as far as the rains are concerned. The heavy rain brought down trees, billboards, electric poles, and others. The windstorm caused some problems on the cables but it took quite some time for ECG workers to realise the faults, hence the power outages.
“The power outages have nothing to do with supply.”
