The military should be held responsible for the clash between some irate residents of Savelugu in the Northern Region and security personnel in relation to the nomination of Hajia Ayishetu Seidu as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Savelugu, Muhammed Abdul-samed Gunu, Savelugu MP, has said.
Some irate residents clashed with police in protest over the appointment on Thursday morning. They marched to the district assembly to lock the place up to prevent the MCE from accessing her office but were prevented from entering the premises by the police.
The police fired warning shots to disperse the crowd but they remained resolute, saying they would not leave the assembly.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday June 16, the MP said: “In a conflict situation, when there is a problem you set up a mediation team.
“I set up a four-member team with personalities from Pwalugu who I think the people respect so much and would, therefore, listen to them.
“They started the mediation and all of a sudden the military came in and the whole thing escalated. I thought they would have allowed the mediation team to go behind the scenes to talk to the people and normalise the situation before they welcome the MCE to the area, but to my surprise I woke up the following morning to hear that there was a military escort of the MCE to the place [the municipal assembly].
“In less than an hour, the people then came out in their numbers and also marched to the municipal assembly.
“To me this was uncalled for, there had been a time frame so that the mediation team around would normalise the situation.”
