An educationist, I K Gyasi, has pleaded with Ghanaians to demonstrate confidence in the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School programme, although they may be encountering some challenges with the placement exercise.
His comment follows claims by a section of Ghanaians that the government intends to cut off some of the students from benefiting from the programme, hence the challenges that have bedevilled the selection placement exercise for this year.
Several students encountered challenges with the internet service, making it difficult to check their placement into the schools.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Sunday, September 3 extended the window of placement by 48 hours after it discovered that over 150,000 qualified candidates had still not been placed, 24 hours after the initial deadline expired.
This means the affected students now have up to Tuesday, September 5 to complete the placement processes.
Speaking on this development in an interview with Accra 100.5FM’s Chief Jerry Forson on the Ghana Yensom show on Tuesday, September 5, Mr Gyasi said: “Challenges with the computer placement have bedevilled all governments since the introduction of the system and so those challenges are not peculiar to this government. I will want Ghanaians to be positive toward the Free SHS and the government in place.
“Is it the government that ordered all the computers in Ghana to be dysfunctioning in order to frustrate the students and to prevent some from benefiting from the Free SHS? I don’t think so. I will want us to adopt a positive attitude toward the programme.”
He however stated that the GES and the Ministry of Education must extend the duration for the placement, given the challenges that have saddled the placement exercise.
“But if the problems persist then I will urge the government to extend the period for the placement,” he said.
