The President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the conflict in Bawku needs to be addressed as soon as possible, as its sensitivity could lead to external terrorist threats.
According to Mahama, Bawku will be one of the major issues his government will confront.
During a courtesy call by the smaller parties, he stated that they were able to manage the situation until the New Patriotic Party took over in 2016, when security lapses contributed to the ongoing crisis in Bawku.
He explained that he had received his first security briefing on the Bawku incident and assured that it would be tackled with a focus on calming the situation.
Mahama emphasized that Bawku is particularly sensitive due to the external terrorist threat, as the region where terrorism is active lies just across the border from Bawku.
Stating that if there is any incursion, the instability in Bawku could provide a fertile ground for terrorist penetration.
He added that, for these reasons, the issues in Bawku need to be addressed as quickly as possible.
