The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEG-GH) has announced the institution of an award scheme for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in the country for the services they render to consumers.
The scheme, dubbed Petroleum Consumer’s Choice Awards, seeks to recognise OMCs that do not only deliver quality services to the consuming public but also ensure the safety of consumers.
A committee will be set up to come up with the criteria for the awards slated for early December this year.
Executive Secretary of COPEC-GH Duncan Amoah told Class Business that “it will be in the interest of the OMCs to at least do what they can to satisfy the consumers so that come close of the year, when names are called or OMCs are mentioned for awards, they will not be left out”.
“So we believe with that in place and also the fact that consumers are now price-sensitive, we will see largely a lot of fairness towards all of us in the system. This will be the very first one and I can tell you already even within the OMCs, there is a lot of enthusiasm. Some believe themselves that they are doing very well. Of course if you visit some of the stations, you don’t need being told attendants are doing very well, environments are improved, pumps are delivering efficiently, consumers are able to walk in and do their business in a safer environment so clearly some of them have invested heavily to get the standard they have gotten and I’m sure we will be able to recognise them,” he added.
Mr Amoah also disclosed that a monthly award scheme has been planned. “From next year, beyond the Consumer Choice Awards, we will be having the monthly OMC award as well so that for every given month, the station that delivered optimum and most efficient prices, services, products in terms of quality, satisfaction and everything, we will be able to also give them the banner for the month, what you will probably call the flag for the month; so next year that will be the situation”.
